MONOSACCHARIDES

 MONOSACCHARIDES are the simplest form of carbohydrates which consist of only one sugar and are water soluble crystalline solids . These are colourless and are usually sweet in taste .

     Examples of monosaccharides are glucose , fructose , ribose etc .

CLASSIFICATION OF MONOSACCHARIDES ;

Monosaccharids are classified on the basis of two catagories ;
1) On the basis of functional group
2) On the basis of NO. of C atoms in the molecule

          If we classify monosaccharides on the base of functional group , we find two types first is due to the presence of aldehyde group and the second one is due to the presence of ketone group .
          The sugars having aldo group are called aldoses as glucose while the sugars having ketone group are called ketoses . We use the suffix 'ose' of the name of aldoses at the end as ribose while we use suffix 'ulose' for the ketoses.
         If we classify monosaccharides on the base of the number of C atom we find trioses , tetroses , pentoses , hexoses , heptoses and etc .
